Good servant of Christ Jesus
Warns his people of error
1. in pointing out these things to the brethren (reminding)
Devotes himself to the study of scripture and is constantly refreshed by it.
2. constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.
Avoids the influence of bad teachings that erodes conviction.
3. But have nothing to do with worldly fables (fit only for old women)
Disciplines himself in godliness.
4. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; ...... since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Works hard.
5. For it is for this we labor and strive (commitment to hard work. spiritual concentration. exhausting.), because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
Teach with authority. Not an inherent authority, but authority from God.
6. Prescribe and teach these things. (keep commanding, keep teaching)
Strives to be a model of spiritual virtue. That the living connects with the teaching. Otherwise the latter will all come apart.
7. Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
Maintains a biblical ministry.
8. Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation an teaching.
Employs his spiritual gift, not neglecting it.
9. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
Is saturated with spiritual things. All mentioned above.
10. Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them. (be in these things.)
and in so doing, be constantly progressing, moving forward in the faith, be in constant repentance, admit failures. (It is called "progress", not that your "attainment will be evident to all")
11. so that your progress will be evident to all. (progressing = growing. none of us have arrived yet. admit mistake, weakness, take the hits, move on.)
Perseveres. Has staying power. Remains faithful in the long haul. By this, he will be a channel used by God for salvation unto others and himself as well.
12. persevere in these things, (stay, remain.) for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
