Why are you downcast, O soul?

Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
My limbs are quick, my youth is gold,
but my heart is ensnared by problems of the old.

In the stillness of the night
and the peacefulness of the day,
my heart is a sea of turbulent waves.
I tried to behold your glory,
but my eyes were covered with scales.
I couldn't taste your milk and honey
with a tongue numb with wine's aftertaste.
For youth and vigour are meaningless,
unless my shackles are shaken off first.

My God, my soul is downcast within me.
Therefore I will remember you.
My God, my soul's delight rests in thee.
Therefore my soul, be STILL.
